We were so pleased to see the latest collection by emerging menswear label Atelier Aura at Cube Showroom during our visit to Paris. There was something so natural and rustic in their Spring Summer 2017 collection.
The style of their latest collection is a mix of nature inspired colours and fabrics with ultimately urban style. We appreciate when a brand pushes the limits of the mainstream, and Atelier Aura does this with their menswear pleated skirt and through each and every expertly crafted piece.
Atelier Aura is THE definition of slow fashion. The garments are almost all treated by hand. One of the treatments we love is what they call "pigment treatment," in which they mix various colour pigments with a matte medium or natural shellac, then each garment is coated by hand. The drying process is also slow in between layers and once the desired effect is achieved, the garment is quickly burned in an oven to seal in the pigments. This entire process can take up to three days, depending on weather conditions.
They put a lot of time and energy into every detail of each piece. The raw edges through to the perfectly placed panels and exposed seams, no detail goes unnoticed. They also use buttons made from naturally shed buffalo horn, each with it's own unique appearance. For most of the pieces, they leave the buttons more rugged, letting the natural fibres and texture of the horn shine through. For the long linen coat, however, they polished the buttons to better fit that particular piece.
Below, you can actually see for yourself just how natural the processes are. They have hung a coat in a barn once owned by the designers grandfather to dry. You can also see the hills of Iceland in the background as some other pieces hang to dry in the fresh air.
