As this week is Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Berlin, we thought we would bring you some local German talent. Michael Maibach is a fashion designer and illustrator from Stuttgart. At a very young 21 years old, we can tell that this is just the start of a very bright future in the fashion industry. Michael describes his style as "inspired by the sculptural aesthetics of ancient Greece" on his website, which is most evident in his first collection The Aging Process. One can also see that his aesthetic is inspired by some of the designers we have previously discussed, such as Boris Bidjan Saberi, Dzhus, Army of Me and Minoár.
Though his first collection The Aging Processwas definitely a very feminine collection, his style has evolved in his later collections. Retreat for Autumn Winter 2014 starts to play around with the idea of androgynous fashion which is fully realised in the latest collection, Progressiv for Spring Summer 2016. As you would expect from the designers we usually profile, Michael works with a monochromatic, greyscale colour palette throughout the Progressiv collection. He also juxtaposes straightforward geometric shapes with flowing fabrics or softer edges. While the pieces have a hint of street style, there is an added sense of luxury to the collection.
